I wanna get a tatoo on the inside of my bottom lip that reads “God” with a little cross, but my parents say (Christians) that if people get tatoos you go to hell! My sister’s boyfriend has a big giant tatoo on his left arm so is he going to hell?

Why are my parents saying this?

well…i dont know how right they are but it is quoted in the Bible that it is a sin a ink your skin..i dont know if you can bypass that by tattooing God on your lip…
im sorry..i dont know if it said you will go to hell though..i guess it is just presumed because it is considered sinful…

    oiy…

  3. Swiss Miss says:

No don’t do anything to your face. It may sound like a great idea now, but imagine being middle aged or a granma with this “thing” on your lip. It will be faded and wrinkled. There are so many more interesting body parts to chose from. I agree with your parents.

  4. Aredhel says:

I bet that your parents just don’t want you to get a tattoo.
It’s not something that most parents want for their children.
However, I’m sure you won’t go to hell if you get a tattoo, but that shouldn’t make you go out and do it w/o your parents permission. That would have to be done by a lax tattoo artist, and that is not something that you’d want, it could get infected.

And I personally don’t know why you’d want something on the inside of your lip, but whatever.

  5. Cordella says:

You’ll be fine. Most of the stuff in the bible was put there to keep you scared of God. You’re not going to hell. You’re parents sound like they need a dose of reality as well. I believe there is a God, but I don’t agree with the way catholics and christians force you to believe what they think is right. I believe on my own terms, and you can too. It’s called thinking for yourself. Get the tat!!

  6. Mom of two says:

ok, first…ouch. second, picture how your lip is going to look when you get it removed someday (or how it will look when you are 80…not attractive). My personal feeling is that God probably cares more about how you live your life…part of that is respecting your parents wishes while you are living under their roof. They obviously have strong feelings against them. If they are still financially supporting you (either giving you $$ or you are living with them), you should respect their opinion and at least hold off until you are on your own.

I personally do not believe that people with tattoos are going to Hell. I have read the bible in its entirety and have not found anything that preaches against body modification. The bible does say that women should not cut their hair, should not wear pants and should always cover their head when praying. I have heard many different theories on these verses.

One thing that the bible does say, though, is that all males should cut off their foreskin to get into heaven. That indicates that God has a twisted sense of humor and is all for body modifications.
Remember: god gave us wisdom teeth, appendixes, etc.

Mentioning these things to your parents would probably just upset them, but when it comes down to it, it is YOUR body.
If someone is against body modification, how far are they willing to go? Do they wear makeup? Have their ears pierced? Get haircuts? Shave? Get braces?

God won’t smite you, hon. Really.

Because they are ignorant and are interpreting the Bible to suit their own agenda. According to Leviticus chapter 19, verse 28, “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD.”. This is in reference to the acts of marking ones self in terms of paganism and satanism…since it says for the dead, not in general. It is all how in how you interpret it. I have ten tattoos, and I am a former Sunday School teacher (Lutheran). Mind you I only had two back then, but still…I was accepted for it and even got a few compliments from some parishioners. In the sake of having respect for your religion, however, if you feel that a religious tattoo is what you want, I would get it in a tasteful manner, so you might want to rethink the tattoo that you desire. If you feel in your heart that that tattoo is not in disrespect to the Lord, go for it! Its all in your intentions in the end. Good luck.

    Look at it this way…

If all people who have tattoos are going to hell, you sure won’t get lonely down there….

  10. Alicia B says:

they just dont want you to look like the people that run around with 327349 tattoos on their bodies. i think that’s there way of scaring you. but no if you are a christian and you get a tattoo you will not go to hell, there is nothing ungodly about them as long as it’s not something about worshiping the devil, my pastor has a huge tattoo on either his back or leg (not exactly sure) of a fancy cross, and i’m sure if a tattoo automatically damned you to hell he would be going too.

    To BLESS THESE SYMBOLS .
    My whole body was shaking.
    Guess what ???????????????
I will have a home in HEAVEN!
Hell is for sinners not tattoos

  12. Spidey says:

This may be why your parents say not to get the tattoo. Leviticus 19: 28 says not to make any marks or tattoos. I would say that no matter what others say, I would want to please God, not man.
A tatto will not send you to hell, but as I see it God wants us to keep our body clean before him. As for sin, “we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3: 23 So none of us can be as Holy as God not doing one thing wrong from when we were young to when we die. So God provided the way to Heaven. It is through His Son Jesus Christ. He paid our debt to God on the cross and He rose again. So now we need to “Repent” and “be converted, that our sins may be blotted out” Acts 3:19 Another verse says “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. ” Acts 16: 31.
In my opinion don’t get a tattoo.

  13. redneck lady says:

Honey, I doubt you would go to hell! I have 2 large ones and I don’t believe I’m going to hell.

The body is your temple of god – Decorate as you wish!!!!

  14. ncamedtech says:

Some ‘Christians’ believe that if you mark your body with say a tattoo you are basically messing with God’s creation. Especially if you have a memorial on your body that is totally taboo according to the Bible. Well all I can tell you is that you have to use your own judgement on this. Have you asked your parents about your sister’s boyfriend? Your parents are saying this because they are going by their beliefs and if you disagree with them but are living at home then you may not have a choice and will have to wait till your 18 and on your own before you get your tat. Take your time, you have as much time as you want to look for and save for what you want. Good Luck to you.

  15. J. A says:

I don’t like to sound preachy, BUT, you do not get to heaven by your actions! It’s by what’s in your heart, your faith. Tats will NOT, send you to hell, no way in hell(sick). There is only one who is perfect, and it ain’t us! How we decorate our bodies, hair, faces mean little. In fact why can’t we use tats to glorify God?! Tats are a testimony. God looks in our hearts, man looks, judges by our appearances. Our bodies will eventually fade away, but our souls will ever last.

  16. JillBug says:

    1. if you believe that jesus died on the cross for your sins, then you WILL go to heaven, regardless of what is on your body. [romans 10:9]
    2. you are not supposed to pierce or mark your body in a satanic or pagan way. [Leviticus 19:28]

    :]

  17. Kellycat says:

I am busy doing a research project on tattoos and have just researched this same question. My conclusion is no you won’t go to hell just for getting a tattoo. There is a verse in the old testiment that states you shouldn;t have tattoos for pagan rituals so as long as the tattoo is not for any pagan rituals it’s fine. The old testiment also says you shouldn’t eat pork or rabbit nor should you wear clothing made of two different fabrics together nor should you round the corners of your hair or beard for pagan rituals (same as tattoos-fine if not for pagan practices) so if your parents do any of those then they are hypocrits. Lastly the God I believe in does not judge a book by its cover but looks to the persons heart.

  18. somebody's knocked up! says:

parents try to scare their kids when they don’t want them to do something. i am a christian and have tattoos and i am not going to hell. it does say in the bible that you shouldn’t get tattoos but it also says that men should not cut their facial hair. women should keep their heads covered at church and not speak at church. you shouldn’t wear mixed fiber clothes (cotton polyester blend) you shouldn’t eat certain foods. bring that all up to your parents and tell them that if you are going to hell for a tattoo then they must believe that they too are going to hell for the things that they do or don’t do that the bible specifies.

  19. The Tattoo Artist-Arc says:

Wow great question to awnser but my therory is that as long as you follow the the 10 commandments you’ll be find with god i dont mean to sound preachy but all god wants you to do is worship him the best way you know how.
god says knock and the the door will open. just pray about it. god will give you an awnser he’ll put it in your heart and you will know what to do then

also just ask god for forgiveness and you will be forgiven

  20. smilie says:

they are probably just trying to scare you out of it. at youth group a few nights ago the topic came up and our youth leader said that the church teaches that if you are getting a tatoo with a meaning, not just to cover yourself with ink or “rebel” (like putting the f bomb across ur forehead… ive seen that) then it is fine =) dont worry
